We've lived in Tokyo for a year now, and one of the things I love most about here is the food. Below's a list of my favorites so far. I'm probably missing a bunch of stuff, but these are the ones that come to mind right now. 1. Cheese ramen- Ramen noodles in cheese sauce topped with a megadose of grated parmesan. An unusual novelty; even some locals are unaware of it. 2. Kaiten sushi- We sit around the counter, while sushi dishes rotate around on a conveyor belt. Just grab the dishes we want, and at the end they charge by how many dishes we've had. Quality is not the highest, but prices are cheap, plus it's a fun experience. My favorite one is near Shibuya station- $1 per plate, but must eat more than 7 plates and finish in 20 minutes. 3. Tsukiji fish market- The freshest sushi I've ever had; just melts in your mouth. Lines start forming at 5am when the restaurants open, so we must get there early. Sushi for breakfast... usually we'll bring jet-lagged overseas visitors there since they're up anyway. 4. Various types of ramen- Ramen is still my favorite, with a huge variety here. Each restaurant usually serves a specific type of ramen as their specialty. 5. Tonkatsu- Fried pork cutlet; I especially like the bacon and cheese filled version. 6. Shabu shabu- Particulary the all-u-can-eat place near our home. Quite reasonable at around $15. 7. Japanse style pasta- Hard to describe, but they put their own twist to Italian food here. Worth a try if you're ever in Japan. 8. ChocoCro- Bakery with awesome crossiants. The best ones are the chocolate-filled. 9. Convenience store food- They're actually quite decent, ranging from sushi to beef bowls to yakisoba noodles. The best part is they're available 24 hours a day. 10. McDonalds Tamago Double Mac- Just had this one today. Their burgers here seem much fresher than the ones in the states. This particular one is pretty much a double quarter-pounder with egg and special sauce. |
